Cycle 5: The Curriculum Expectations

The arts program for Grades 1 to 3 focuses on the foundational knowledge and skills students need in order to learn through and about the arts. The expectations for Grades 4 to 6 focus on the development of students’ knowledge and skills in the arts and their ability to use the arts to understand, explore, and communicate feelings and ideas from and about their multicultural, multimedia environment. The expectations for Grades 7 and 8 focus on the consolidation of students’ knowledge, skills, and strategies in the arts and their ability to use the arts independently and effectively to enhance their learning in school and to communicate feelings and ideas about their multicultural, multimedia world.

Welcome to Cycle Five of the Professional Learning Module for the implementation of the revised Ontario curriculum document, The Arts, Grades 1-8, 2009.  In this cycle you will be examining the curriculum expectations as they pertain to the four Arts disciplines: Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts, to create a unit and lesson plan.

The Focus of the 2009 revision includes:

  • Arts as meaning making
  • Arts for exploration of feelings and ideas
  • Arts for communication
 Dance
  • specific expectations for dance
  • dance elements defined
  • dance as communication through movement
 Drama
  • process drama and role play
  • drama elements defined
  • drama as a way to explore multiple perspectives, human condition and develop empathy
 Music
  • singing, playing, moving, listening (participation) and composition
  • supports for generalist (e.g.oral prompts)
  • inclusion of standard and non-standard notations
 Visual  Arts
  • examples using multiple art forms including technology
  • elements through application and exploration of ideas and contexts
  • composition, elements and symbols for the purpose of communication
  • principles throughout the curriculum

 

Using the samples and the planning templates provided, plan a unit of study/ lesson for the Arts strand and grade of your choice.
