The OMEA Annual General Meeting will take place on Saturday November 5, 2011 in Waterhouse 3 (11:45 am) during PRIMO (lunch is provided in the room). During our AGM we will be putting forward a motion to accept some changes to the OMEA Constitution. All OMEA members would have received the proposed changes as a PDF attachment during the first week of October. We hope that you will take a few moments to review these changes and also hope that you will join us at our AGM. Using the iPod Touch for Composition
- Kevin Merkley
When we talk about the students in our classroom, our "digital natives", and how they need to be learning to meet the skills of the 21st century, we often forget that tools that are commonplace for our students (such as the Ipod Touch) are often not part of this equation for changing the way we teach, and the way our students learn. There is an emerging technology that has the flexibility to be a useful tool in the music classroom that might be of interest to both our “digital natives” and our music teachers.
I am going to share with you how you can make this work, and what some of the pros and cons are in using the technology in a music class for composition, exploring sound, or having your kids have a chance to “rock out!” Having experimented with using this tool with adult learners over the past few months, I have witnessed the great potential this tool has, and have also realized some of the challenges!
What you need to make it work
- up to 5 Ipod Touch (approx $200 each with 8MB memory)
- Belkin RockStar Headphone Splitter for IPod and MP3 Players ($14.95)
- up to 5 MP3 3.5 mm cables ($7-10 each)
- stereo system or IPod dock where a 3.5 mm cable can be connected
- a variety of free (or purchased) Ipod Touch Instrument Apps
